Reading in Prison Day, London UK
Pairing with a Book Club Outside of Prison
A Toronto women’s book club has matched half of its 2011-2012 reading list to that of the Collins Bay Book Club and is swapping responses to the books with the prisoners. Both clubs discussed The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck in November. “I don’t think I have ever read a book that described so compellingly the sense of being trapped in a situation that is beyond changing – and totally hopeless” wrote one of the women. And one of the prisoners wrote: “It made me think about my family’s own struggle and what we went through to get from Jamaica to Canada and America”.
A Christmas Carol with Michael Enright and Many More
BCFI organized a reading of A Christmas Carol at Collins Bay Institution and Frontenac Institution. Broadcast celebrities, Michael Enright and Judy Maddren joined local figures Jim Garrard, Director of the Kingston Summer Festival, Chris Whyman, Kingston Town Crier, and others to read for the two productions. About 100 prisoners attended each event.
